WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Public Wise, an organization committed to fighting for a multiracial democracy that reflects the will and protects the rights of the people, released the following statement in response to the unanimous vote by the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack to affirm their final report and recommend the Department of Justice pursue criminal charges against former President Donald Trump:

“We applaud the Committee’s steadfast commitment to delivering accountability to the American people and ensuring that this violation of our democratic principles will not happen again. Trump, sitting Members of Congress and his supporters must be held accountable for their actions. We urge the Department of Justice to take action and bring criminal charges as swiftly as possible and for the other investigative and ethics bodies who received referrals to do the same. No one, especially the elected officials we voted into office to serve the American people, is above the law,” said Christina Baal-Owens, Executive Director of Public Wise.

“Make no mistake – this is just the beginning of the fight to prevent the next insurrection and protect our fragile democracy. More than 220 insurrectionists were elected to office in 2022 and Donald Trump is currently running for President of the United States. The events of January 6th are just one facet of a decades-long effort, fueled by white supremacy and hate, to undermine our democracy and overturn the will of the people in order to permanently enshrine the rule of a white and wealthy few and strip Americans of our fundamental freedoms. We urge Congress, the White House and the American people to take immediate action before it’s too late – our democracy’s future is on the line,” said Baal-Owens.
