Public Wise Statement in Response to Former President Trump’s Arrest

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Public Wise, an organization committed to fighting for a multiracial democracy that reflects the will and protects the rights of the people, released the following statement on today’s indictment of former President Trump by the state of New York: 

“Today, a jury of everyday Americans across all races, backgrounds and parties indicted former president Trump on charges of bribes and corruption. We applaud the efforts of the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his team to make former president Trump answer for his crimes. The American people deserve leaders who believe in and live by our values of justice, equality and accountability. 

“While we welcome this long overdue step to bring the former MAGA President to justice, we cannot forget that he has still not answered for his violent attempt to overthrow the U.S. government. The same MAGA Republicans who planned, promoted and attended the insurrection are now attempting to undermine our legal system in defense of Trump, betraying the American people and the judicial system our country is built on. This is just the first step on the path to delivering real justice for the January 6 attack. The real threats against our democracy are the extremist election deniers serving in our statehouses, our Congress and running for President of the United States,” said Christina Baal-Owens, executive director of Public Wise.
