WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Public Wise, an organization committed to fighting for a multiracial democracy that reflects the will and protects the rights of the people, released the following statement following ProPublica’s reporting on Justice Alito’s fishing trip with billionaire Paul Singer:

“Justice Alito’s decision to attend a luxurious weekend with GOP billionaire Paul Singer and then refuse to recuse himself from a case involving Singer’s hedge fund and his subsequent attempt to clear his name with a poorly argued, laughable opinion piece shows us that corruption is systemic on the Supreme Court. Members of the highest court in the land not only believe that they are not required to follow basic legal guidelines, but seem comfortable openly defying ethical norms. The Court is making it clear they believe there is a different standard for people with power and access than there is for the vast majority of Americans.

“These are the same people we are entrusting to make decisions about the future of our democracy. How can we expect them to rule in favor of everyday Americans when they are in cahoots with extremist billionaires who have bought the ear of a Supreme Court Justice? Congress must address this crisis immediately and pass the Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act to root out this malfeasance and consider expanding the Court to ensure that justice is central to our country’s highest court, not corruption.” said Eli Szenes-Strauss, political director of Public Wise.
