Doug Mastriano’s Victory in Pennsylvania Signals the Unraveling of Democracy As We Know It

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Public Wise, an organization committed to fighting for a multiracial democracy that reflects the will and protects the rights of the people, released the following statement regarding insurrectionist State Senator Doug Mastriano winning the Republican nomination for governor in Pennsylvania:
“Doug Mastriano’s victory in Pennsylvania last night signals the unraveling of democracy as we know it. This is a man so willing to subvert the will of the people that he traveled to the Capitol on January 6 and organized buses for his fellow insurrectionists to overturn the 2020 election. Mastriano was subpoenaed by the House Select Committee for his role in the insurrection and continues to spread dangerous disinformation about the results of the 2020 presidential election. Mastriano is a white supremacist trafficking conspiracy theories, promising to ban abortion, and vowing to reset all voter rolls,” said Christina Baal-Owens, Executive Director of Public Wise. “If he is successful in November, Mastriano will do everything in his power to strip our voting systems to the bone so that he and his fellow insurrectionists can deliver elections to whoever they want. Mastriano is supported and has been endorsed by Trump as a part of a nation-wide strategy to install allies in swing states like Pennsylvania in order to steal the election in 2024. This year’s midterm elections represent our last chance to protect our fragile democracy and fight for free and fair elections.”
In addition to State Senator Doug Mastriano, twenty-eight insurrectionists are advancing to the general elections in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Oregon, Kentucky and Idaho. U.S. Representatives Scott Perry, Fred Keller, Hal Rogers, Mike Kelly, Lloyd Smucker, John Joyce, Guy Reschenthaler, Daniel Meuser, David Rouzer, Gregory Murphy, Richard Hudson, Russ Fulcher, Cliff Bentz, and Glenn Thompson are moving onto their general elections for the U.S. House of Representatives. Senator Ted Budd and Rand Paul won re-election to the U.S. Senate, and candidate Jo Rae Perkins is leading in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Oregon. Reed Knox Christensen lost his primary race for Governor of Oregon, and Bill McSwain, Charlie Gerow, Jake Corman, and Lou Barletta lost in the Pennsylvania gubernatorial primary race. Teddy Daniels and Rick Saccone lost in the Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Republican primary. In Pennsylvania, Kathy Barnette lost in the primary for U.S. Senate. Representative Madison Cawthorn lost his primary in North Carolina’s District 11, and State Senator Bob Steinburg lost his reelection campaign in North Carolina’s District 1.
