Newly-elected House Speaker Mike Johnson Poses an Immediate Threat to our Democracy

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Public Wise, an organization committed to fighting for a multiracial democracy that reflects the will and protects the rights of the people, released the following statement on the election of Representative Mike Johnson to Speaker of the House: 

“The most powerful person in Congress was a key architect of January 6 and. He continues to spread disinformation about our elections, staunchly opposes lgbtq+ rights,, and is an anti-abortion extremist. This is the best the Republican party could do, after spending three weeks in-fighting and vying for attention during multiple global conflicts. The Republican party is showing us that they don’t care about our democratic institutions. All they care about is maintaining their grip on power and returning our country to minority rule, fueled by white supremacy and hate. 

“The American people made it clear in 2022 that we will not allow our rights to be undermined and reject attempts to overturn free and fair elections. Our priority in 2024 must be electing candidates who are committed to protecting and ensuring that all Americans can live freely and authentically, demanding justice for the events on January 6th, and protecting and expanding our democracy,” said Christina Baal-Owens, executive director of Public Wise and the Insurrection Index.
