Public Wise Responds to the SCOTUS’ Decision to Make it Harder to Charge January 6 Defendants with Obstruction

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Public Wise, an organization fighting to secure a government that reflects the will and protects the rights of the people, released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision on the January 6 obstruction case:

“Make no mistake, the violent January 6th attack on the Capital–and on our democracy–is no minor disruption, nor a one-time incident. The January 6th attack was but one part of a decades-long strategy to undermine our democratic institutions and restrict our freedoms. We should be doing everything in our power to hold accountable those who seek to undermine American democracy, not make it more difficult to administer justice, as the Supreme Court has ruled today.”

Since the insurrection, Public Wise has been a leading voice in calling for accountability for elected officials who participate in anti-democratic activities. In 2022 they launched the Insurrection Index which holds over 1,800 records of individuals and organizations in public trust who played a role in the insurrection. They have recently released the Election Threat Index designed to identify local and state-level officials who have credibly participated in election denial activities. Public Wise and their grassroots partners then work to hold these individuals accountable, counter their attempts to suppress voters, and elect candidates committed to upholding our democracy.
