Public Wise Statement on Election Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Before polls begin closing this evening, Christina Baal-Owens, Executive Director of Public Wise, issued the following statement:
“For the past few weeks leading up to today, we’ve seen the democratic process unfolding across the country. Millions of voters cast their ballots early, election officials adjusted to unforeseen circumstances like Hurricane Helene, and many thousands of volunteers trained to be poll workers this cycle. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all of the election workers who have stepped up to serve their communities to ensure a free and fair election.
“Tonight after the polls close, we must be prepared that no matter what results show, Donald Trump and his allies will attempt to declare victory. This will be a continuation of a years-long attempt to undermine the will of the people which, in the last Presidential election cycle, ended in a deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Let me be clear: Donald Trump does not have the last word in this election — we need to trust our electoral system. Donald Trump doesn’t decide who wins. The voters do.
This election is not over until every vote has been counted, and we will not cede to lies and intimidation.”
