WASHINGTON, D.C. — Public Wise, an organization committed to fighting for a multiracial democracy that reflects the will and protects the rights of the people, and Public Wise partner The New Georgia Project Action Fund, a nonpartisan organization working to build power and increase the civic partnership of the New Georgia Majority, released the following statement on the 41-count indictment of former President Trump and 18 other defendants, including former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, in the state of Georgia:
“We applaud DA Willis for her steadfast commitment to delivering justice to the people of Georgia, despite repeated, targeted threats from a former President. This investigation, the most expansive legal challenge Trump is facing, will ensure that Georgians and the American people receive answers about Trump’s effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, including his targeting of state officials, a fake electors scheme, and breaches in voting systems in the state. The people of Georgia, led by dedicated organizers and activists, have worked for decades to build political power, particularly for the Black and brown communities who have been systematically disenfranchised by the state. President Trump must answer for his crimes and feel the full weight of a justice system committed to accountability, democracy and truth,”said Christina Baal-Owens, executive director of Public Wise.
“This indictment against former President Trump proves that no one is above the law in our country. Because of his sour grapes, the former President has wreaked havoc on our democracy, caused too many voters to call into question the integrity of our elections, upended the lives of innocent Georgians just trying to do their jobs, and literally gotten people killed. It’s embarrassing for our nation—and particularly shameful for the GOP—that this lying narcissist is the Republican presidential frontrunner. With this fourth indictment, all eyes are, once again, on Georgia. No matter what bad actors like the former President try to do, Georgia voters know their power, and they know how to tell right from very wrong.
