Ella Wind, PhD
Senior Research Associate
Ella is a Senior Research Associate at Public Wise. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from New York University. Prior to joining Public Wise, Ella served as a research consultant for Start Point NGO, a Syrian-led grassroots organization that works to advance gender equality in Syria. She previously worked as the Syria content editor for Jaddaliya, which provides social and political analysis of news and academic research on the Middle East and North Africa. Her public writing has appeared in outlets such as Jacobin, New Politics, and Al-Ahram (Egypt’s largest circulating newspaper).
Some of her other research projects include an analysis of the political fragmentation of the Syrian opposition from 2011 to 2015, published in Beyond the Arab Spring: The Evolving Ruling Bargain in the Middle East, an interrogation of the socio-economic consequences of the Syrian civil war, co-authored with Omar Dahi and published in Turkish Review, and an investigation of the political drivers of welfare state growth in high-income democracies using historical datasets dating back to WWI.
Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Ella received her B.A. in Economics from Hampshire College and an M.A. in Near East Studies from New York University. She currently lives in Toronto, Canada with her husband and daughter.
